While its author and the exact time of its origin are not known, it is believed by some to have been created in the early 1900s, although according to other sources this was originally an older women\u2019s wedding dance and song that originated at the town of Kosovska Mitrovica in the Serbian province of Kosovo i Metohija. Compared to many other Serbian traditional folk songs \u201cAjde Jano\u201d might not be a very old song but it had nonetheless gained an enormous popularity and has become a staple song at various public events and gatherings such as traditional celebrations, weddings, folk music festivals etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The striking beauty of its melody and a characteristic sound of this song prompted numerous musicians and artists from all over the world to perform it live or to record their own arrangements. Even a simple search for \u201cAjde Jano\u201d on YouTube would return a long list with dozens of different versions, revealing this song\u2019s enormous potential for successful integration into different musical styles and situations. I would highlight just some interesting arrangements by various international artists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><b>Kroke Band<\/b><\/i>, a Polish world music instrumental ensemble, recorded their own version of <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gDqhElZLnU8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on their album <i>\u201cTrio\u201d<\/i> in 1996<\/li>\n<li>American world music recording artist <i><b>Talitha MacKenzie<\/b><\/i> recorded her own version of <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RrfiMtnahsY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on her album <i>\u201cSpiorad\u201d<\/i> released in 1996<\/li>\n<li>English violinist <i><b>Nigel Kennedy<\/b><\/i> with the <i><b>Kroke Band<\/b><\/i> and Egyptian-British singer <i><b>Natacha Atlas<\/b><\/i> released <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OTk9cuveGNU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on the album <i>\u201cEast Meets East\u201d<\/i> in 2003<\/li>\n<li>Finnish accordionist <i><b>Teija Niku<\/b><\/i> and <i><b>Grupa Balkan<\/b><\/i> recorded <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yf4OzUzbaAg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on her album <i>\u201cFinsko Pajdusko\u201d<\/i> in 2011<\/li>\n<li>Italian jazz\/world music musician <i><b>Daniele Sepe<\/b><\/i> released <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wpgXfiefDD8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on his album <i>\u201cCanzoniere Illustrato\u201d<\/i> in 2012<\/li>\n<li>Polish singer <i><b>Kayah<\/b><\/i> released <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L219iMxfXxI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on her album <i>\u201cTransoriental Orchestra\u201d<\/i> in 2013<\/li>\n<li>Japanese band <i><b>Japalkan<\/b><\/i> recorded and performed their version of <i>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lV_6DrEMCuA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ajde Jano<\/a>\u201d<\/i> on the <i>\u201c<\/i><i>K\u00fcstendorf Film and Music Festival\u201d<\/i> in 2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the recent years a heated debate has developed concerning the song lyrics. This unnamed man is determined to dance with Jana at any price and he is persistently inviting her to dance with him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His affection becomes obvious just by looking at his offerings to Jana in return for a dance: a horse and a house! Anyone willing to part with two of the most valuable possessions in return for a dance or two would be considered out of their mind even in modern times and especially in the times this song was created in. Having this is mind, we can suspect that his affection towards Jana is not a consequence of a deep and pure love but rather of utter recklessness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An easily overlooked fact in the text reveals that both the house and the horse are their common property, as the man repeatedly exclaims:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>&#8216;\u0410\u0458\u0434\u0435 \u0408\u0430\u043d\u043e, &#8216;\u0430\u0458\u0434\u0435 \u0434\u0443\u0448\u043e, \u043a\u043e\u045a\u0430 \u0434\u0430 <b>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/b><u><b>\u043c\u043e<\/b><\/u>!<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>C\u2019mon Jana, c\u2019mon honey, <u><b>let\u2019s<\/b><\/u> sell the horse!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>and:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>&#8216;\u0410\u0458\u0434\u0435 \u0408\u0430\u043d\u043e, &#8216;\u0430\u0458\u0434\u0435 \u0434\u0443\u0448\u043e, \u043a\u0443\u045b\u0443 \u0434\u0430 <b>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/b><u><b>\u043c\u043e<\/b><\/u>!<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>C\u2019mon Jana, c\u2019mon honey, <u><b>let\u2019s<\/b><\/u> sell the horse!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This clue reveals more details about their relationship. Since they share the ownership of both the horse and a house, it looks like they are a married couple that lives together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another concealed clue is the type of dance \u2013 <i><b>\u201c<\/b><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kolo_(dance)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Ko<\/b><\/i><\/a><i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kolo_(dance)\">lo<\/a>\u201d<\/b><\/i>. Kolo is a traditional circle-dance that involves several dancers. (Read more about \u201c<i>kolo\u201d<\/i> dance in my essay: <i>\u201c<\/i><i>Vodichanka kolo\u201d<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This detail points to the wider context of this song. <i>Kolo<\/i> dance is an inseparable part of any traditional celebration or gathering, especially in the rural settings. Typically, these events include weddings, various \u201crites of passage\u201d celebrations, religious holidays, sowings, harvests and many other traditional activities and occasions. At such large celebrations <i>kolo<\/i> dance often involves dozens of dancers, as it is customary for all attendees to join the dance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some contemporary examples include traditional annual fairgrounds festivals and folk music festivals such as the famed <i><b>\u201cS<\/b><\/i><i><b>h<\/b><\/i><i><b>abacki vas<\/b><\/i><i><b>h<\/b><\/i><i><b>ar\u201d<\/b><\/i> (City of Shabac Fairgrounds Festival &#8211; <i>\u201c\u0428\u0430\u0431\u0430\u0447\u043a\u0438 \u0432\u0430\u0448\u0430\u0440\u201d<\/i>) or the world famous annual trumpet music festival <i><b>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gucafestival.rs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gucha Festival<\/a><\/b><\/i><i><b>\u201d<\/b><\/i> (<i>\u201c\u0413\u0443\u0447\u0430 \u0444\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043b\u201d<\/i>) and many others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While not related to this song, it\u2019s worth mentioning that the most common traditional celebration, unique to Serbian people, is <i><b>\u201c<\/b><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Slava<\/b><\/i><\/a><i><b>\u201d<\/b><\/i> (pronounced as: <i>\u201cSlah-vah\u201d<\/i> &#8211; in Serbian Cyrillic alphabet: <i>\u201c\u0421\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0430\u201d<\/i>). It is a religious, ritual glorification of a family\u2019s patron saint day. \u201cSlava\u201d doesn\u2019t involve any dancing and it is not a large celebration but rather a private event for family members, relatives and close friends. Being a closed, private celebration, attendance at \u201cSlava\u201d feast for anyone other than the family members requires a special invitation, and being invited to one is a sign of deep respect and close friendship to the family.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Serbian writer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stevan_Sremac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Stevan Sremac<\/b><\/i><\/a> (1855-1906) masterfully depicted one such typical <i>\u201cSlava feast\u201d<\/i> in his famous novel <i><b>\u201cIvko<\/b><\/i><i><b>va<\/b><\/i><i><b> Slava\u201d<\/b><\/i> or <i><b>\u201cIvko\u2019<\/b><\/i><i><b>s<\/b><\/i><i><b> <\/b><\/i><i><b>Feast<\/b><\/i><i><b>\u201d<\/b><\/i> (in Serbian: <i>\u201c\u0418\u0432\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430 \u0441\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0430\u201d<\/i>). The plot centers around a seemingly never-ending feast taking place over the course of three days, in the city of <i><b>Nish<\/b><\/i> (in Serbian: <i>\u201c\u041d\u0438\u0448\u201d<\/i>), near the end of the XIX century. A comedy movie <i><b>\u201c\u201d<\/b><\/i> based on the novel was released in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As expected and so characteristic for the colorful and expressive people in the <i>Helm<\/i> region (also known as <i>\u201cBalkan peninsula\u201d<\/i>), any large celebrations include loud music, dancing, singing, often with demonstrative gun and rifle firings, and above all eating and drinking or rather overeating and excessive drinking! Throwing an extravagant feast for those special occasions is a matter of prestige and a display of pride and social status. Most often such celebrations would start early in the day and extend throughout the night, while in some extreme but not too uncommon situations they would extend well into the next day and sometimes run continuously for several days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The key ingredient here is the excess in eating and especially in drinking! Without any justifying or criticizing of these activities, it is obvious that more often than not participants become irresponsible or even incapacitated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note here that in the old times only the privileged upper class citizens would have been able to afford such extravagant celebrations while the common people and peasants struggled in relative poverty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we suppose that the lyrics, as shown above, are indeed the original text for this song I could only argue that indeed the most likely context for this song is one of such extended celebrations in which participants desperately want to keep dancing and celebrating while been incapacitated due to the excess food and alcohol consumption. This would explain the insane decision making by our unnamed lead player.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, we would have a hard time trying to find a single equivalent for such direct suggestive recklessness and a praise of careless irresponsibility in any other Serbian traditional folk song lyrics. While some folk songs treat certain situations around mischievous behavior, carelessness, laziness etc., a highly suggestive message and a direct praise implied in this song\u2019s lyrics seem curiously inappropriate for the social context at the time of this song\u2019s creation, even if it was created as recently as in the early XX Century. It is not very likely that a song with such lyrics would be accepted for a wide public use in a patriarchal and relatively conservative society that Serbia represented in the early XX Century, let alone any earlier period.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some recent versions have been created for the lyrics, including the ones written by the famous Serbian musician <i><b>Asim Sarvan<\/b><\/i>, While this idea might seem like a \u201cconspiracy theory\u201d many similar cases of altering or banning traditional folk song lyrics are well known. Given the brutal and totalitarian nature of the communist rulers in Yugoslavia after the Second World War and their desire to ultimately destroy local culture, tradition, religion and any national sentiment, this could very well be the case. After all, the banning of books, destruction of historic documents, abolition of freedom of speech and political and religious freedoms, mass imprisonments and executions quickly became communists\u2019 favorite methods and are altogether well documented.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An American world music recording artist <i><b>Talitha MacKenzie<\/b><\/i> recorded her own version on her album <i>\u201cSpiorad\u201d<\/i> released in 1996 for the <i>\u201cShanachie Entertainment\u201d<\/i> record label. <i>MacKenzie<\/i> wrote new lyrics, based on the original structure and introduced an anti-war context.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i><b>Ajde Jano\u201d by Talitha MacKenzie<\/b>, from the album <b>\u201cSpiorad\u201d<\/b> released in 1996:<br \/>\n<\/i><b><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/RrfiMtnahsY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/RrfiMtnahsY<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RrfiMtnahsY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The production, recording and performance are outstanding and the pacifist nature of the lyrics is surely a noble idea and a positive, encouraging direction within the larger context. On the other hand, the history of the Balkan lands, continuous fighting for a bare survival and striving for independence throughout the ages have taught the locals that arms cannot be set aside that easily.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not unlike in the other parts of the world, the people of the Balkan lands had to constantly remain vigilant to recurring attacks and attempts to conquer their lands and freedom by foreign invaders. This goes back to the ancient times of the expanding <i>Roman Empire<\/i>, the invasions of the <i>Avars<\/i> and the <i>Huns<\/i>, to the historically recent invasions of <i>Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy<\/i> and beyond. After all, virtually all armed conflicts of the XX century in Balkan lands have been more or less induced or outright caused by the actions of powerful foreign geopolitical players. Sadly, even in our times we are witnessing similar attempts in the form of economic pressures and other modern forms of warfare.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I would propose another scenario for a new, duet version of the lyrics.
